Both move water off your property. They just intercept it in different places — one below the sod, one on top of it — and choosing by name instead of by water path is how yards end up with a drain that clogs or a ditch that never fills. Two tools, two different waters
A swale is a shallow, wide, grassed channel graded into the yard — surface plumbing. It intercepts water that moves across the ground: downspout discharge, runoff arriving from a higher neighbor, sheet flow that stalls and ponds on a flat stretch. It works in the open, you can mow across it, and when it's shaped right most visitors never notice it's there.
A French drain is a trench holding perforated pipe bedded in washed stone and wrapped in filter fabric — subsurface plumbing. It collects water that's in the ground: the saturated band that keeps a strip of lawn spongy for days, the soil moisture leaning on a foundation or crawl-space wall. It works blind, buried under the sod, and everything about whether it keeps working is decided on installation day.
The diagnostic, then, isn't in a catalog — it's in your yard during the next hard rain. Put boots on and watch. Water arriving and traveling on the surface points to a swale. Ground that's still saturated two or three days after the sky cleared points to a French drain. Both symptoms at once is common here, and it means the honest fix is a system, not a single trench.

- The wet zone sits where surface regrading can't reach — between houses, behind hardscape, under an area you can't reshape
- A swale already handles the surface flow and a stubborn saturated band remains — the classic second phase
Why French drains fail — and what a real one includes
Most "my French drain quit" calls trace to one of three shortcuts. No fabric: clay fines wash into the stone and grout it solid, usually within a few seasons. No fall: pipe laid flat holds water instead of moving it; a drain needs continuous downhill grade end to end, checked with a level, not eyeballed. No outlet: the pipe has to daylight somewhere genuinely lower — a ditch, a pop-up at the curb line, an approved discharge — because water that reaches the end of a pipe with nowhere to go simply backs up the trench. A drain built right here reads like this: trench cut to grade, filter fabric lining the excavation, washed stone bedding, perforated pipe at consistent fall, stone over the pipe, fabric folded closed, and a protected outlet you can find and flush years later. Every one of those pieces is doing a job; every omission has a failure named after it.
The order of operations that saves money
When a yard needs both fixes, sequence matters. Surface water is the bulk mover — a single storm can put hundreds of gallons across a lawn — so grading and swale work comes first and often shrinks the subsurface problem outright, because water that exits on the surface never gets the chance to soak in and become the French drain's workload. Then the drain is sized for what genuinely remains. Yards that buy the pipe first frequently end up re-grading anyway, with the trench fighting the new grades. This ordering is the backbone of how we scope drainage correction jobs: walk it in the rain if we can, fix the path water takes across the ground, then put pipe only under the water that's left.
It's also the budget-friendly ordering. A swale spends machine time; a drain spends machine time plus pipe, stone, fabric, and an outlet structure. Letting the cheap tool do the heavy lifting keeps the expensive tool short — and a short French drain with real fall and a real outlet beats a long one built to a price.
